Project strategies: Light analysis, color translucency effect, green concept
Personal approach on the project: Solar analysis, concept development
The pavilion design was inspired by the visual function of a tree and the complexity of its translucence, which is conformed by the leaves movement and the shadow effects . Firstly, the pavilion’s location within the square was decided by finding the most shadowed area during summer and the most uncovered area during winter, in order to catch up the better climate conditions.
The initial concept was simplified by creating a cube with an envelope conformed by three flexible curtain layers with stamped trees that opens up during summer and closes up during winter. Each layer has a primary color that when interposed creates a particular translucency effect. Complementary colors are put together to get a layer covered with a higher shadow perception during summer. According to the heliodon, the pavilion’s solar irradiance during summer is low, so it is well protected from sun penetration, while in winter the solar radiance is high enough to let the sun in and heat the space.
